John Elway's Controversial Draft-Day Saga Relived in ESPN's 30 for 30 Special

David Elway's NFL career got off to an uneven start when he was picked No. 1 overall to the Indianapolis Colts. ESPN's 30 for 30 collection will explain Elway's draft tale in its "Elway to Marino" specific on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. ET. Elway was the very first of six quarterbacks chosen in the 1983 NFL draft. He did not want to perform for the Coltsa'a team that hadn't had success for a relatively good timea'and had warned the team not to select him with the initial overall pick. Having performed one summer of minor league baseball for the New York Yankees, Elway had a bit of leverage over owner Robert Irsay. George Steinbrenner wanted Elway as his starting proper fielder, and the quarterback's threat to simply take Steinbrenner on his present to play professional football was far from idle. All of us know very well what happened next. The Denver Broncos resolved a business with the Colts to acquire Elway, and the rest is history. Elway proceeded to get two Super Bowls with the Broncos, was a Pro Bowler and was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2004. What you may not know, nevertheless, is that Elway was very nearly dealt to the Oakland Raiders instead (h/t Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post). Elway's draft tale paved the way in which for Eli Manning to pull a similar stunt in the 2004 NFL draft. Manning refused to perform for the San Diego Chargers, which ended up trading him to the Brand New York Giants inturn for Philip Rivers and two draft picks. It is fascinating to ponder what could have been if Elway hadn't been able to persuade the Colts to deal him. Would he have certainly gone through together with his threat to play baseball?
