Angry millions of Newcastle United fans battled with police and threw missiles as they attempted to fight with rival fans following Sunderlandas 3-0 win at St Jamesa Park. Although there was no difficulty in the ground, Newcastle fans, many of whom had watched the match in city centre bars, tried to confront Sunderlandas supporters because they were escorted by police to Newcastle Central Station to board trains and metros. The abuse is an indicator of the unstable character of this fitting, which often requires a large police function to avoid the two sets of fans from clashing, and hints at the pressure Newcastleas director, Alan Pardew has become under.
